The Worlds 10 Most Expensive Dog Breeds
Below you will find our countdown of the worlds most expensive dog breeds and also find out what the most expensive dog ever sold to date was…. This popular post has been fully updated for 2011.
The most popular dog breeds are not the worlds most expensive dog breeds, but the luxury dogs rate high in the top of the list. Popular dog breeds change from year to year and from country to country; and so do the most expensive dogs in the world.
What Makes a Dog Expensive?
There are a variety of factors which make dogs expensive. Purity of breed or their rarity can make dogs extremely expensive. When they are offspring from prize winning dogs the prices can skyrocket too, but the biggest factor is the C-factor. As soon as a dog is spotted or photographed in possession of a celebrity, the dog’s price will shoot beyond the moon. It has happened in the past, and it will happen in the future.
The most expensive dog ever sold
The most expensive dog ever sold was recently in March 2011, a red “Tibetan mastiff” called Big Splash, or “Hong Dong” in Chinese. This most expensive dog ever is already 11 months-old and already stands nearly three-feet-high at the shoulder and weighs more than 180lbs, says his breeder, Lu Liang. He was purchased by a chinese multi-millionaire coal baron.
‘Big Splash’ sold for an amazing 10 million Yuan which is about 1.5 million US Dollars and beats the earlier record set by another Tibetan Mastiff Tibetan mastiff” called Yangtze River Number Two which was sold to a chinese woman in 2009 for a whopping 4 million Yuan (About $609,000). But this still doesn’t make the Tibetan Mastiff generally the most expensive dog breed.
Top Ten of Expensive Dogs
Roaming along the internet, in a variety of countries here is a countdown of the top ten most expensive dog breeds our editors found.
10 – Akita
Ok so in at No.10 for the most expensive dog breeds is the Japanese Akita which can sell for between $1,500 – $4,500
9 – Bearded Collie
At No.9 in our list of the worlds most expensive dogs is bearded Collie which can be sold for between $1,000 and $5,000
8 – Pharaoh Hound
In at No.8 of the most expensive dog breed is the Pharaoh hound which can fetch between $2,500 – $6,500
7 – Tibetan Mastiff
At No.7 in our list is the Tibetan Mastiff which can usually go for around $2,200 – $7,000. Now although one of these was sold for a whopping $1.5 million it still doesn’t make it as generally the most expensive dog breed.

The Rottweiler makes it to number 6 in our most expensive dogs list at between $2,000 – $8,000
5 – Chow Chow
At No.5 of our list is the Chow-Chow a chinese breed which can fetch between $3,000 – $8,500

The Samoyed which originates from Siberia is our No.3 selection which can be bought for between $4,000 – $11,000
2 – Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
And 2nd in our ‘Top Dog’ list is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel from England which can sell for a princely sum of between $1,000 – $14,000 and the No.1 most expensive dog breed is…………………
1 – German Shepherd (Alsation)
In at No.1 as the most expensive dog breed in the world has to be the very versatile Alsation which can fetch anything between $3,000 – $24,000..
So there it is. An exciting list of dog breeds, and unfortunately some very popular dogs did not make it to the top ten.
What happened to the Golden Retriever, Komondor, Malteser Terrier, Bichon Frise, Norfolk Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier and the Australian Shepherd? All popular dogs but they did not make it into the top ten of most expensive dogs 2011.
Worlds Most Expensive Dog Breed
The winner is the German Shepherd, a trustworthy dog which has proven it’s capacity to be trained beyond the scope of many other dogs. The German Shepherd can be trained as a rescue dog, drug sniffer and as guidance dog for the visual impaired. Not a wonder that he/she claims the top of the list of the most expensive dogs in the world. A dog training institute in Germany sells their German Shepherds for a cool $24,000, they claim to train the best rescue dogs in the world.
More is not always better. The price of the dog is not important, it is all about the love it gives to you and the love you can give back to the animal.
As always please feel free to share your thoughts below….

What’s your referrence? Why is not bulldog, french mastiff, french bulldogs, etc. not on the list? A rott at 14K????? Perhaps you’re talking about a German shepherd (which could be priced at 12K if trained in protection and has a perfect conformation). This list is insane.
Bulldog is on the list. And I find that the list is very accurate. Did you even read the list? Your comment doesn’t make sense.
I also agree with this list.. My akita ziggy cost around 3700… so i have no clue what list you are referring to..
I have had 4 german shepards in my life each one more loyal and unique then the other. I have seen some of them sell in excess of $25,00.00. The most expensive one was my female, imported from germany with trainging and titles for $8000.00. I had her for 12 years and what a dog… I would have paid $25,000.00 for her. The german shepard definately deserves to be number one.
this makes me laugh!the top 2 most expensive you can so cheap over here in england, even if they are KC REG! Akitas are rather cheap to! pugs seem to be really expensive going for about £1000 – £1500,and boston terriers are about the same! i have a border terrier which was average price – £500. german shepards are notworth $25,000! they can have so many health problems and dont live very long.
I really want a chow chow dog but there too expensive! I’m ganna try to convince my parents to get me one for my birthday!
I’ve had $8000 rottweilers and $1000 collies but my best dogs have been free from the shelter. A doberman beagle mix also looks hell of a lot better than any of those dogs. Chow chow pffft
Amazing that these days people are willing to pay huge amount for dogs. In addition, I would not be surprise if someone would break this record in the near future. By the way, I like the look of the Chow Chow dog.
Chinese crested’s go for around 8,000-30,000 bucks or more. And I got my Samoyed for a mere $50…I feel lucky! haha!
i think its wrong to put a price on a dog. i dont know why people pay thousands, (even tens of thousands) for a dog who's parents were winning show dogs, its no guarantee that the offspring will even be any good at dog shows anyway, its the trainer, not the dog. And you get some of these breeds at shelters for free, so rescue a dog, you might be saving its life.
The only reason that a dog should be expensive is if the breeders are outstanding and lots of love and excessive care and medication has gone in to the breeding and the puppies are given appropriate diets and are well looked after from birth.
But still, I (and countless others) prefer rescuing my new best friend from a shelter.
Chows and Rottweilers are common breeds in Dallas area of Texas. You can pick them up often at the animal shelters in the area. So I was surprised to see them on the list. I half expected Maltese to be on it since an ordinary puppy usually goes for 1,000 dollars or more. Akitas are also relatively common.
The Bearded Collie surprised me because I didn't think many people bought them. I am owned by a German shepherd and a Malois.
I've been fortunate to have had 3 shepherds. Amazing dogs, very smart and very loyal. I bought them from a shepherd rescue for $200 or less. I will continue to get them from rescues these dogs have been thrown away when they're not wanted anymore. Highly recommend doing this
saw one tibetian mastiff while visiting our friend's village in nepal ………we're shocked to see a dog that fucking dog …….they can knock out pitbull with one single punch, heard that they fight with tigers too ….and one more thing, their penis is big to lol … no joke. …..have you ever seen tibetian mastiff? cause no body is talking about it. its fucking huge…………best dog ever seen
I think the best dogs as apet is the labrador, they are so friendly and cute
haha!!!!!!!!!! I think the best dogs are germen shepherd and labrador yuks!!!!!!! Please guys tell which one is better??????
i agree with kaustbuh, because i have a labrador and they are the most FRIENDLY & LOYAL dogs
i agree with THE TRUTH & Kaustbuh
LABRADORS ARE THE BEST DOGS
German shepherd all the way.
i’m proud to own one and no other breed can beat this shepherd’s loyalty.its amazing
many people dies around the world because of hungryness and some others pays milion dollars for dogs !!!!!!!
This list cnt be right sum of the dogs on the list u can get really cheap the only 1 I lyk is the chow but unfortunately wear I live they are about £2,000 so don’t fink al be buying 1 of them lol out of interest has any1 seen tht 1million pound dog the red Tibetan mastiff who would spend that much on a dog mentalllll!!! Lol
To the person who said, in reference to dog shows that it is “the trainer, not the dog” that is utter–utter none sense. It IS correct that champion parents guarantee nothing, that is true. Getting the right conformation, size, structure, perfect gait (no toe in, toe out), perfect teeth (no missing, all aligned, movement and temperament, it’s all near impossible to get in one dog and brother, NO TRAINER can make up for a dog who is not a genetic specimen.
wow you all r idiots i rehabiltate dogs…evan the most horrible end up as amazing pets. its about the trainer( ALL ABOUT THE TRAINER ) IT IS THE TRAINER NOT THE DOG!!!!!
how about mini pinscher?
my dog is not a german shepherd or chowchow something and they just give it to us but for me his the most precious sweet little thing for me!!!!!!!!!
=)
No Tosa Inu?
these dogs are buetiful.
i wish i could afford the Chow Chow.. BUETIFUL DOG! and i bet they must look sooooo adorable as babies.. thats what im going to do.. im going to get one for my project.!! and then keep it as my own afterwords!
BRILLIANT!!!!
these dogs are turley amazing. how much was the chow chow??.
they are bu=etiful as puppies. i am a dog breeder fr the choclate labs.
I have the 3rd most expensive dog yay
its not right . only chow chow, pitbull, red tibetan mastif, bull dog r expensive .
Lol..This cant be accurate as the pricing varies on where you are selling the specie. say german shepherds are likely cheap in Germany as most germans has it. lol.. My rott on the other hand was just given to me by an acquaintance as souvenir. Do you know that a mere mongrel can be sold to up to $1000 in europe while they are over populated in asia and they are likely be killed by local in an instance.
i have a coacasian dog, that what 1.5MN.IT WAS IMPORTED FROM RUSIA.
Ok, the list is dumb….it doesn’t depend on the breed what the cost will come out to, but the titles, pureness, and history…was he or she breed from a champ…also to the losers who say no other dog is as loyal as a german shepherd, well ur wrong…I have owned many different dogs, fromfull blown mutts, that no line could be determined to chows, germans, chihuahuas and more. Curently I own 4 dogs, a shorthaired deer head chihuahua (kaia), a terrier-husky shephard mix (bucky), a chihuahua-wolf husky mix (falkor) and an akita german shepherd (valkyrie) that I resently was given… though my 2 girls are pups, valkyrie 8 weeks and kaia is 3 months they are very good and loyal..they. are very protective and patient with my kids and gurard already..and my two boys, bucky anf falkor are differnt in ages…bucky is about 2 years and I got him when he was 12 weeks…he is very loyal, patient and freindly and also extremly protective..he is a great dog and same with falkor, who is only about 8 months, all my dogs I have ever owed have been just as loyal as a german shepherd and I love my dogs dearly….they are a part of my family not just a pet, and those who think oh its just a dog don’t need to own them. In order for a dog to be as. Loyal to u as posible you need to treat them rite, food, vet home and u need to respect them..it is on the owner to determine the relationship between them and the dog…my dogs have always been my babies and they know it, so I get the best from them…u want the best then give the best…same with cats and I have 2, and my dogs love my kitties and visa versa, wanna know why because no one is a favorite, they are treated equal and even my cats will guard…again u want ur dog to be as loyal as posible then treat them that way, treat them rite, don’t just throw em in the yard, and expect the best because you won’t get it..I get it cuz my dogs are alowed inside and out, and they get special treats everyday, hair comebed teeth brushed the works, and they love it, and in return they all give me the best…so all u who think only one kind of breed is good, ya need to shut ur trap because I know from 25 years of experience…different dogs, breeds, temperments, even dogs with adhd, and yes one of mine is adhd, and he still is very loyal regardless…again I have 25 years backin me up on this topic, treat ur dog/pup like family and ull get the best, don’t and u won’t…
You’re being ripped off in America!
I think its sad that I “almost” got an English bull dog for only 200… Sadly I spent the money on something else -_- and got a different dogg that was free.
what about the Argentinian dog? it’s a gr8 dog.and where i come from dogs don’t cost that much.
Bulldogs and German Shepherds – my two favourite breeds!
