Choosing a Dog Bed: 5 Factors to Consider

The right dog bed can make both you and your dog happier. Choosing a dog bed that will keep your dog comfortable and your life simple can sometimes seem like a difficult task–but it doesn’t need to be if you consider these factors.

1. Size
Think about the size of your dog and the size of the space where you will be placing the bed. Check the dog size and weight recommendations on the dog bed’s packaging. Make sure your dog will have enough room to stretch out and sleep on the bed. If you’re  dog’s not yet fully grown, look for a bed that will fit him when fully grown.

Dog bed material is important for a number of reasons. Beds stuffed with cedar are good for porches and other outdoor areas, as they repel insects, insulate from heat and cold, and absorb moisture and odors. Foam or plush beds are perfect for dogs who appreciate a soft, cozy place to rest. Orthopedic beds, made of memory foam and other materials reduce stress on your dog’s joints and are perfect for senior and arthritic dogs. Look for a material that can be cleaned easily–many dog beds come with a machine-washable removable cover.

There is nothing more frustrating than coming home to a shredded dog bed. If your dog is an avid chewer, look for beds that are made from chew-resistant fabric or chew-proof aluminum.

If your dog likes to curl up to sleep, you may want to choose a donut-shaped bed. These beds have soft walls that help your dog feel cozy and secure. On the other hand, if your dog likes to sprawl out when he sleeps, you may opt for a large rectangular bed instead.

4. Home Decor
A dog bed need not be an eyesore. Today’s dog beds come in a variety of colors and styles to coordinate with your home decor. Consider the room in which you’ll be placing the bed when choosing a style. Many dog beds are even designed to resemble people furniture like sofas, beds and lounge chairs.

5. Budget
Dog bed prices vary widely. When choosing a bed, remember to shop for value. A cheap dog bed may be of inferior quality and have to be replaced quickly. Don’t shop on price alone–weigh the price of the bed against its features and benefits to find the best bed for your budget.
