The most expensive dog beds are a pair owned by a U.K. surgeon who had them custom-built for her pets. Off-the-shelf luxury dog beds can run as much as $2,000. If your dog is content to sleep in his humble bed on the back porch with only a few chew toys to keep him company, then maybe he shouldn’t read this. He doesn’t need to know that there are dogs out there living in $400,000 dog houses with heated, sheepskin-lined beds that raise or lower according to the dog’s wishes. Presumably, in a shack like this, even the fleas wear silver collars.

The canines of the very rich do not sleep in the same type of dog beds that the mutts of the poorer classes do. FiFi and Phideaux would be aghast at the simple, cloth-covered foam affairs available in standard pet stores. They sleep in luxury in beds designed just for them.

The dog-bed described above is being made for a surgeon in the UK who is apparently doing very well under socialized medicine. She wishes to remain anonymous, but pictures of the proposed dog house have been published on the internet.

Of course, if you can’t afford to have a designer come up with a unique bed for your pooch, you can still buy him an off-the-shelf model that will have all of his doggy pals drooling in envy. Some of the most expensive lines of dog beds sell for over $1,000.

This might be quite a comedown for the surgeon’s dogs, but most pups will appreciate chewing up the back of the Lillian Cuddle Couch. This is a smaller version of a human couch, only the back is curved somewhat to semi-encircle a round cushion. The solid-wood frame is abundantly upholstered to make a soft sleeping area. It is also Teflon-coated to make it easier to keep clean.

Another resting place that man’s best friend might like is the Beverly Hills bed. This miniature imitation of a real human luxury bed is a little more expensive; it can set you back as much as $1,700. However, the combination of faux fur and faux leather is stunning and will look good in any bedroom.

If you feel that Snuckums deserves better than that, don’t worry, it’s available. Those of you who have an extra $2,000 in your small-change drawer can order a custom-made, monogrammed bed of faux leather and soft velvet from Chien Vivant Couture, a luxury dog bed manufacturer.

All of this brings up memories of Senator George Graham Vest’s “Eulogy to a Dog.”

“He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master’s side… He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince… If fortune drive the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger…”

This was written in 1870. Today’s dog may be hard to convince that he should leave his $2,000 bed to go sleep out on the ground with you.

BEING a border collie, Pixie is blessed with natural smarts – all the better to help the eight-week-old pup learn sign language.

Adorable as she is, Pixie is also deaf, which is why a Coffs Harbour specialist is teaching her to recognise hand commands.

So far, Liz Grewal has taught Pixie to sit, drop and come forth.

An owner of deaf dogs for six years, she’s now instructing Pixie in the all-important art of doing her doggy business outdoors.

“Dogs understand your body language, your hand gestures, they read all of that. They know,” Mrs Grewal said.

“Consistency is the key to training any dog but you have to emphasise it more with a deaf dog. You’ve to train them in a different way, they train quicker than a hearing dog as there are no noise distractions.”

Mrs Grewal gets the attention of her four deaf dogs by squirting them with a little water bottle.

She said deafness is common among canines: “I want these dogs to have a fantastic life, and I know they can do it.”

While Pixie’s breeding gives her a distinct learning advantage, new Canadian research suggests some dogs are as smart as a two-year-old human.

Professor Stanley Coren from the University of British Columbia found the average dog can understand about 165 words, signs and signals, while the cleverest dogs could grasp as many as 250 words and signals.

The research also revealed smart canines are capable of basic maths, counting up to four or five and noticing errors in simple arithmetic. Professor Coren said dogs can tell that one plus one should equal two and not one or three.

Border collies are the smartest, while the thickest breeds include basset-hounds and the bulldog.

Having a new dog is an exciting milestone for every family. Aside from preparing your house for his arrival, everyone will be so eager to name the newest addition to the pack.

Dog names are now being adapted from people names. This is the latest trend in naming dogs and it echoes a shift in the attitude of many responsible dog owners. More and more people are treating their pets as integral parts of the family, not just as pets but as equals.

If you are looking for a name for your male dog, you can easily take your pick from a long list of popular dog names. You will surely have a hard time picking out the best one that will fit your dog.

Whether you want to choose a people name, or derive inspiration from something else like a pet’s appearance, personality, countries of origin, nature and many other sources, it is a good thing to wait and get to know the dog first before deciding on the what name to give. Having a long list of potential names from the most popular male dog names will eventually help you pick out the best one.

There are dog owners who regret giving their dog a name which was a product of a spur-of-the-moment decision. Indeed, when you have picked out the name and your dog already recognizes his name, changing his name will only create confusion. If you really want to pick out the best name for your pet, here are some useful guidelines to help you on your search.

•	Pick a name that you like. You’ll be using that name thousands of times in a dog’s lifetime, make sure you are comfortable with it.
•	A pet can easily recognize his name and is able to respond better when its name is made up of one or two syllables. Three or more syllables may be difficult to say and might confuse your dog.
•	Get a name that you will not be embarrassed to call out in the dog park. Will you be comfortable calling your dog Sir Galahad or Stinky?
•	Avoid picking out names of someone you know. You wouldn’t want your best friend, Jake, overhear you telling somebody that you had your dog, also named Jake, neutered or telling your dog “off the couch, Jake”.
•	Stay away from dog names that sound similar to commonly used commands. Sketch may be perceived by your dog as “fetch” or Moe might be mistaken as “no”. Most dogs find it difficult to tell the difference between words having similar sounds.
•	If you want a long name like Incredible Hulk or Sailor Moon, have a nickname that can be used during training and for calling him.
•	Pick a name that your pet will not be “embarrassed” with when he grows up. “Bebe” will not be as cool when a Bloodhound grows to be almost a hundred pounds or when a Bullmastiff is named “Button”.

Whatever name you will choose for your dog will provide a peek into your dog’s personality and how you view your dog and your relationship.

DogNamesWoof.com is also a great place for choosing fun and meaningful female dog names!

People want dogs for different reasons. Some want companionship, some want little cuddly lap dogs, and some people want a dog which can easily be trained. Some dog breeds are naturally more intelligent than others and will pick up instructions much more quickly. Therefore we have compiled a useful resource of what we think are the top 10 most intelligent dog breeds. You will also find out what we found to be the most intelligent dog.

The following most intelligent dog breeds list may be open to interpretation as all dogs have their own personalities.

The first listing in our top 10 most intelligent dog breeds is for the Border Collie which is widely regarded as the most intelligent dog. These dogs have been used for hundreds of years for sheep herding due to their ability to understand and follow instructions. They are extremely focused animals.

The next entry may surprise some since they are seen as playful, cuddly dogs, but Poodles are actually one of the most intelligent dogs. Their typical purpose has been to retrieve objects from water, which is a habitat they are very comfortable in.

A German Shepherd’s intelligence combined with its size means that it can be trained to be a very effective guard dog. They are very loyal dogs and are always aware of their surroundings. For this reason they have been used by police and military forces around the world.

Next up is another large dog, the Golden Retriever. Unlike the German Shepherd however, these dogs are naturally friendly and placid. They are therefore better suited for tasks such as, as the name suggests, retrieving.

Dobermans, however, make the perfect guard dog. They are large dogs and territorially aggressive. They are very alert animals, and can be trained to be very good protectors of people and property. Their high intelligence means that they will understand and be very effective in their role as guardian.

Just like Border Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs have been used for herding purposes due to their extremely high intelligence. The fact that they are so bright and alert also makes them very good watchdogs.

Next we have the Labrador Retriever, which is a popular family dog due to its friendly nature. These dogs make very good companions due to their loyalty and affectionate natures, and have been used for hunting and retrieving.

The Papillon is a very small dog. Their inclusion on this list is because of their easiness to train and obedience, which highlights their intelligence. They are very affectionate and loyal little dogs.

The Rottweiler is another large breed which makes an excellent guard dog, although they have also been used for police work and for search and rescue. They have a reputation for being naturally aggressive, although this usually comes from protecting their territory.

Finally we have the Australian Cattle Dog, which is another of the most intelligent dogs. This is another dog bred for herding due to its high intelligence. They are extremely obedient and hard working animals.

So that completes the list of the top 10 most intelligent dog breeds. In terms of what is the world’s most intelligent dog, there have been many contenders from Hollywood such as Lassie and Rin Tin Tin. It must be remembered that several different dogs actually filled these roles, although they were all highly intelligent to be able to be trained so effectively. The world’s most intelligent dog ever might in fact be ‘Rico’ a border collie from Leipzig in Germany, who in 2004 was trained to understand over two hundred different words.

This planet has its extremes. Extreme heights, extreme depths, ferocious animals, incredible animals, huge animals, but very rarely do you think of a tiny little animal as extreme.

Well this little Chihuahua from Florida is pretty extreme. Extreme in a different sense of the word, she is extremely small. In fact she is the worlds smallest dog.

Meet the world’s smallest dog. Her name is Heaven Sent Brandy and she is a whopping 6 inches long from tip of nose to tip of tail.

Not all impressive animals need to be large, aggressive or even interesting. This little dog is pretty impressive because you can hold her in one hand.

She is nearly one third the size of most new born babies, and most cats reach her size in just a few short months.

Special leashes, beds and even dog clothes need to be made for such a tiny little doggy.

Most people assume that because she is such a small little animal she is still a puppy but she is not. She is a full grown Chihuahua.

It is no wonder that the worlds smallest dog is a Chihuahua. The Chihuahua is one of the smallest breeds of dogs. The size, or lack
thereof, of this little dog has made it a very popular pet for many people to own.

Even movie stars have been seen carrying these pretty little dogs around, usually in purses. Chihuahua’s make wonderful pets and you can walk them
just like a big dog. Being a little dog they can tend to be yappy dogs. Even though they are small little dogs their bark can pack a punch. This trait comes from their parents so be sure to know if their parents are loud barkers or not.

If you plan on keeping a Chihuahua be sure you do your research and learn all you can about these wonderful little creatures to be sure you have a
good place to keep them. But do not expect to get such a small little dog every time. Chihuahuas are usually about 8-10 inches, and live to be
around 15 years old (human years).

Paulette Keller is the lucky owner of this world record little dog and they both live happily in Largo Florida, a great place for a little dog to live, but watch out for the crocs.

About the author: Ben loves dogs and is an avid dog owner. His smallest dog is 120 pounds and 8 years old, named Maximus. Ben usually saves money from using 1800Petmeds Coupon Codes at the 1800Petmeds retailer. Taking care of dogs can cost quite a bit of money so using coupons is a great way to cut back on expenses.

The bigger the dog, the more costly it becomes.

Here you will find a gallery of the worlds biggest dogs. Every year there are millions of puppies born, some grow to be small, some grow to be big big and then there are those that grow to be Huge. In the past decade, there have been a fair few dogs that have been labelled as the Worlds biggest dogs.

To take the crown of one the worlds biggest dog all depends on how you determine “biggest”. Does it mean the “tallest”? Does it mean the “heaviest”? In the Guinness World Records book, they break it down into individual categories. For this very reason…

The World’s biggest living Dog though is a dog called Hercules, an English Mastiff who weighs 282 pounds and has a 38-inch neck. He is owned by J. Flynn of Peabody, Massachusetts. This dog weighs more than his owner does, and the owner is no lightweight at 270 pounds.

Hercules was recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records in June, 2001 after a friend noticed a large Mastiff in the Guinness Book and thought it was Hercules. After calling the organization, Flynn discovered that the previous winner (a 296-pound mastiff) was deceased, making Hercules the new worlds biggest dog.

You will find a picture of Hercules below with his owners. (He’s nearly as big as the horse). You will also find more pictures below some more of the worlds biggest dogs. Enjoy, and if you like this post then don’t forget to share it with the ‘share’ button below the pictures.

There are many different breeds of dog and finding the easiest dog to train for you or your family can be a difficult choice as there are various different areas and problems to consider. This post should help you decide on finding the easiest dog to train by listing the dogs with the very best training abilities.

There are no guarantees with which dog breeds are the easiest to train as many will behave in certain ways and there will always be exceptions in every breed of dog just like there are differences between us humans. But there are many characteristics that you can look out for when finding the easiest dog to train, here are some of the top dogs in reverse order of how easy they are to train and how quickly they pick up different tasks and activities.

Border Collie

The border collie is not as trainer friendly as some of the breeds below but is a very hard working dog with lots of affection and bundles of energy. The border collie enjoys challenges and challenging training schedules. If you cannot spare at least an hour of intense exercise and recreation with this breed each day then this might not be the easiest dog to train for you.

Australian Cattle Dog

The Australian cattle dog is yet another of our easiest dogs to train choice as they are quick to learn new tricks to due to their passion for learning, although they are not so good with other pets and may be a bad choice if other pets are in and around your home.

Sheepdog

Sheepdogs are renowned for being an excellent well behaved training dog on places such as farms and holdings. Although good and faithful to owners, these dogs don’t take so well to other people with who they are not familiar with, if you have many visitors to your home it may not be an ideal choice of breed.

German Shepherd

This is again a dog with very high drive to learn new things and explore things further but is not as friendly as our no.1 spot of the easiest dog to train below. The German Shepherd is also not as energetic either, but is a very good protector of it’s family and home.

Labrador Retriever

This has to come in at the top of our easiest dog to train list. The Labrador retriever is a very affectionate dog that takes well to unknown strangers, very friendly, versatile and perhaps the best choice of dog if you want a dog that is quick to learn and also has the personality to back it up. Don’t forget these dogs are used to guide the blind, so they are both highly trustworthy, gentle and intelligent.

There are many other dog breeds around, and you may prefer other training breeds so before getting a dog be sure to explore all aspects to make sure the chosen dog is correct for you. Even mixed dog breeds can offer a variety of easy training possibilities.

But you will notice something from the above list, in that all of these dogs are also classed as working dogs so they are all bred to be trained to a high level in carrying out responsible work duties, so this makes the list what we think is a pretty definitive list of the easiest dog breeds to train.

Below you will find our countdown of the worlds most expensive dog breeds and also find out what the most expensive dog ever sold to date was…. This popular post has been fully updated for 2011.

The most popular dog breeds are not the worlds most expensive dog breeds, but the luxury dogs rate high in the top of the list. Popular dog breeds change from year to year and from country to country; and so do the most expensive dogs in the world.

What Makes a Dog Expensive?

There are a variety of factors which make dogs expensive. Purity of breed or their rarity can make dogs extremely expensive. When they are offspring from prize winning dogs the prices can skyrocket too, but the biggest factor is the C-factor. As soon as a dog is spotted or photographed in possession of a celebrity, the dog’s price will shoot beyond the moon. It has happened in the past, and it will happen in the future.

The most expensive dog ever sold

The most expensive dog ever sold was recently in March 2011, a red “Tibetan mastiff” called Big Splash, or “Hong Dong” in Chinese. This most expensive dog ever is already 11 months-old and already stands nearly three-feet-high at the shoulder and weighs more than 180lbs, says his breeder, Lu Liang. He was purchased by a chinese multi-millionaire coal baron.

‘Big Splash’ sold for an amazing 10 million Yuan which is about 1.5 million US Dollars and beats the earlier record set by another Tibetan Mastiff Tibetan mastiff” called Yangtze River Number Two which was sold to a chinese woman in 2009 for a whopping 4 million Yuan (About $609,000). But this still doesn’t make the Tibetan Mastiff generally the most expensive dog breed.

Top Ten of Expensive Dogs

Roaming along the internet, in a variety of countries here is a countdown of the top ten most expensive dog breeds our editors found.

10 – Akita

Ok so in at No.10 for the most expensive dog breeds is the Japanese Akita which can sell for between $1,500 – $4,500

And 2nd in our ‘Top Dog’ list is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel from England which can sell for a princely sum of between $1,000 – $14,000 and the No.1 most expensive dog breed is…………………

1 – German Shepherd (Alsation)

In at No.1 as the most expensive dog breed in the world has to be the very versatile Alsation which can fetch anything between $3,000 – $24,000..

So there it is. An exciting list of dog breeds, and unfortunately some very popular dogs did not make it to the top ten.

What happened to the Golden Retriever, Komondor, Malteser Terrier, Bichon Frise, Norfolk Terrier, Staffordshire Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier and the Australian Shepherd? All popular dogs but they did not make it into the top ten of most expensive dogs 2011.

Worlds Most Expensive Dog Breed

The winner is the German Shepherd, a trustworthy dog which has proven it’s capacity to be trained beyond the scope of many other dogs. The German Shepherd can be trained as a rescue dog, drug sniffer and as guidance dog for the visual impaired. Not a wonder that he/she claims the top of the list of the most expensive dogs in the world. A dog training institute in Germany sells their German Shepherds for a cool $24,000, they claim to train the best rescue dogs in the world.

More is not always better. The price of the dog is not important, it is all about the love it gives to you and the love you can give back to the animal.

As always please feel free to share your thoughts below….

Description of the Temperament Test

The ATTS Temperament Test focuses on and measures different aspects of temperament such as stability, shyness, aggressiveness, and friendliness as well as the dog’s instinct for protectiveness towards its handler and/or self-preservation in the face of a threat.

The test simulates a casual walk through a park or neighborhood where everyday life situations are encountered. During this walk, the dog experiences visual, auditory and tactile stimuli. Neutral, friendly and threatening situations are encountered, calling into play the dog’s ability to distinguish between non-threatening situations and those calling for watchful and protective reactions.

Dogs must be at least 18 months old to enter this test. The test takes about eight to 12 minutes to complete. The dog is on a loose six-foot (6′) lead. The handler is not allowed to talk to the dog, give commands, or give corrections.

Failure on any part of the test is recognized when a dog shows:

Unprovoked aggression

Panic without recovery

Strong avoidance
