Dogs have been used for many different purposes. Different breeds were used for different things, but always met the demands of the handlers. Many roles for dogs in war are obsolete and no longer practiced.

Anti-tank warfare

Anti-tank dogs were dogs taught to carry explosives to tanks, armored vehicles and other military targets. They were actively trained by the Soviet and Russian military forces in 1930–1996 and used in 1941–1942 against German tanks in World War II. Although the original dog training routine was to leave the bomb and retreat so that the bomb would be detonated by the timer, this routine failed and was replaced by the impact detonation procedure which killed the dog in the process. The U.S. military trained anti-tank dogs in 1943 for use against fortifications, but never deployed them. Dogs strapped with explosives were unsuccessfully used by Iraqi insurgents in 2005.

Attack dogs

An attack dog is any dog bred, trained or used for the purpose of attacking a target either on command or on sight. Attack dogs have been used often throughout history and are now employed in dog fighting, as well as police and military roles.

Military mascot

Military mascot refers to a pet animal maintained by a military unit for ceremonial purposes or as an emblem of that unit.It may also be referred to as a ceremonial pet or regimental mascot.It differs from a military animal in that it is not employed for use directly in warfare as a weapon or for transport.

Medical research

In World War II, dogs took on a new role in medical experimentation, as the primary animals chosen for medical research. The animal experimentation allowed doctors to test new medicine without risking human lives, though these practices came under more scrutiny after the war. The United States’ government responded by proclaiming these dogs as heroes.

The Cold War sparked a heated debate over the ethics of animal experimentation in the U.S., particularly aimed at how canines were treated in World War II. In 1966, major reforms came to this field with the adoption of the Laboratory Animal Welfare Act.

Scouts

Some dogs are trained to silently locate booby traps and concealed enemies such as snipers. The dog’s keen senses of smell and hearing would make them far more effective at detecting these dangers than humans. The best scout dogs are described as having a disposition intermediate to docile tracking dogs and aggressive attack dogs.

Scout dogs were used in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam by the United States to detect ambushes, weapon caches, or enemy fighters hiding underwater, with only reed breathing straws showing above the waterline. The US operated a number of scout dog platoons (assigned on a handler-and-dog team basis to individual patrols) and had a dedicated dog training school in Fort Benning, Georgia.

Drug and explosives detection

Both MWDs and their civilian counterparts provide service in drug detection, sniffing out a broad range of psychoactive substances despite efforts at concealment. Provided they have been trained to detect it, MWDs can smell small traces of nearly any substance, even if it is in a sealed container. Dogs trained in drug detection are normally used at ports of embarkation such as airports, checkpoints, and other places where there is high security and a need for anti-contraband measures.

MWDs can also be trained to detect explosives. As with narcotics, trained MWDs can detect minuscule amounts of a wide range of explosives, making them useful for searching entry points, patrolling within secure installations, and at checkpoints. These dogs are capable of achieving over a 98% success rate in bomb detection

Intimidation

It is believed that the use of dogs on prisoners in Iraq was learned from practices at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. The use of dogs on prisoners by regular U.S. forces in Guantanamo Bay Naval Base was prohibited by Donald Rumsfeld in April 2003. A few months later following revelations of abuses at Abu Ghraib prison, including use of dogs to terrify naked prisoners; Rumsfeld then issued a further order prohibiting their use by the regular U.S. forces in Iraq.

Oscar was rescued from a South African kennel by owner Joanne Lefson five years ago. In May the pair began an epic journey hoping to inspire millions to help save his fellow canines living as strays on the streets. Dodging crocodile-infested rivers, walking on the Great Wall of China and escaping Italian police Oscar finally finished his tour last week. The £250,000 six-month trip – which Joanne funded by selling her home – also took in 15,000 shelter dogs and at more than 50 charity-run rescue centres. The pair capped off the tour at Brazil’s famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio, Brazil. Ms Lefson, who is half British and half South African, had the idea to take the titanic trip dubbed ‘The World Woof Tour’.

He is a fully grown Rottweiler. She is a tiny wolf pup. But that hasn’t stopped 18-month-old,150lb dog Ulrok and and eight-week-old cub Beldaran becoming best of friends They sleep together, frolic in the sun and even howl at the moon in unison – and their unlikely union brings a smile to the face of everyone who sees them. Beldaran, who weighs just five pounds, was adopted by the Rottweiler when she was just four days old at the Kisma Preserve in Mt Desert, Maine, USA, after she was rejected by her parents.

Since then the unlikely pair have been inseparable in everything they do. Both are rescue animals and spend all of their time together at the reserve where they are cared for at the centre’s sanctuary. The organisation takes in creatures of all breeds and all sizes. Preserve director Heather Grierson, 49, said: ‘It’s a true love story that has touched the hearts of everyone who visits the preserve. You just can’t be in a bad mood when these two are around. It’s impossible to look at them and not feel good. Beldaran is lovingly described as a ‘little accident’ by the 12 staff at the sanctuary – who didn’t know she was due and believed her rescued parents Gandalf, one, and Kahlani, two, were too young to have babies.

Both parents were handed in to the sanctuary when they were young. It is thought they had been snatched from the wild for the purpose of breeding them with dogs to make hybrids – a fad in America. It causes many problems,’ said Heather. It’s purely for fashion and people don’t realise the difficulties of caring for these wild breeds. Then they either dump them or hand them over to us. It was a massive shock when Kahlani gave birth,’ she added.We didn’t even know Gandalf had it in him and suddenly we had a little wolf pup on our hands.Sadly, because of her young age, Kahlani’s maternal instincts failed to kick in and she ignored the new arrival. Heather said: ‘We started to get really worried because Gandalf didn’t have a clue what to do and we were really concerned he might hurt Beldaran.

In an effort to get the pup some maternal care, Heather and her team placed Beldaran with another canine at the centre – Yorkshire Terrier Mia – who had just finished raising her own litter and was still lactating. But the Yorkie wasn’t interested either and made every effort to avoid the pup that was being pushed on her. ‘That’s when Ulrok stepped up,’ said Heather. Ever since Beldaran’s arrival he had been trying to get involved in everything. He would clean her and when she was making her puppy whimpering he would bound over to investigate. He had such a massive interest in her that we decided he would be the best option and we could bottle feed the wolf. It worked out brilliantly. Now Ulrok – a rescue dog whose previous owners imported him from Europe and gave him up when they couldn’t cope – and his new love eat, drink, play and sleep together. The duo have also become a huge attraction at the reserve. Once Beldaran is full size and can fend for herself, Heather plans to gradually introduce her to a group of adult wolves at the park to make sure she stays all wolf and is not alienated from her own species.At this stage it has all been about giving her a paternal figure and Ulrok accepted the role gladly. At 18 months he is still a puppy in his head and he also needed a companion to play with. It was a perfect match. Dogs and wolves are very similar biologically and they both need strong social ties when they develop.We’ll eventually move Beldaran in with the other wolves in phases but I’m sure her bond with Ulrok will always be there. After all this time together they will never forget each other.

Owners Lynn and Peter Jones, from Shrewsbury, entered him for the title with Guinness World Records after learning of the death last month of the previous title holder, a 21-year-old dachshundcross in New York called Chanel.

Otto’s claim to the record was approved this week and Mr and Mrs Jones were presented with the certificate as a surprise while taking part in filming for the November 4 edition of Channel 4’s Paul O’Grady Show about elderly dogs.

They attribute his longevity to ‘plenty of love, plenty of good food and regular check-ups at the vets’.

Otto has arthritis, which somewhat limits his activities, but the couple say he is still sprightly.

‘He doesn’t really like walkies any more,’ Mrs Jones said. ‘He gets about ten yards down the road then looks back over his shoulder as if to say “I want to go home”. But he’s still playful. He can still jump all over people when they come round.’

By early evening, however, Otto is ready for bed. Often this means Mrs Jones has to sleep in the spare room because Otto likes to be tucked up next to her husband.

The oldest dog on record was Bluey, an Australian cattle dog, who lived to 29 years and five months before having to be put down in 1939.
